To fix a balance still showing after a bankruptcy discharge, confirm the loan was in your discharge, then send the lender and every credit bureau reporting it a written dispute with your case number, discharge date and a copy of the discharge order. CreditRefresh reads your reports from all three bureaus and drafts that letter for each wrong item; you review and sign every one before it is sent.

A balance on a loan you thought was gone feels like the bankruptcy failed, and every call to the lender seems to go nowhere. It did not fail. A wrong line on a report is a reporting problem, and the law gives you a written way to correct it.

How do I confirm which loans my bankruptcy discharge covered?

Start with your discharge order and the schedules filed in your case. A discharge releases you from personal liability for covered debts, but a valid lien survives the case, so a secured lender can still enforce its claim against the collateral (U.S. Courts). Section 523(a) of the Bankruptcy Code also excepts some debts, among them most tax debts, domestic support obligations and educational loans unless you prove undue hardship (Bankruptcy Code, 11 U.S.C. 523(a)).

To get the order, ask the clerk of the bankruptcy court. The District of Colorado court, for one, emails discharge orders and schedules as PDFs at no charge when you send your name and case number. You can also use PACER, where a single document is capped at $3 and fees are waived if you run up $30 or less in a quarter (PACER User Manual, 2026).

How do I find where a discharged loan balance is still showing?

A leftover balance can sit in three places: your credit reports, the lender’s statements, or collection notices, and each has its own fix. Pull your report from all three bureaus and note the balance, the status and any discharged-in-bankruptcy comment on the account.

An account included in your bankruptcy should report as “included in bankruptcy” with a zero balance. The CFPB’s report checklist asks the same question: are zero balances recorded for debts discharged in bankruptcy (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, 2017)? A discharged status with a zero balance is accurate, and you dispute only what is wrong. To get your reports:

  1. Visit AnnualCreditReport.com, call (877) 322-8228, or mail the request form to P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281.
  2. Request all three reports (Equifax, Experian and TransUnion) at once, or one at a time.
  3. Be cautious of sites claiming to offer free reports; use AnnualCreditReport.com or that phone number.

How do I write the lender to correct a discharged balance?

Your letter names the account, the specific balance you dispute and why it is wrong, and encloses proof. Regulation V requires a direct dispute notice to identify the account, state the information disputed with the basis, and include supporting documents such as a court order or account statements (eCFR, 12 CFR 1022.43). Your discharge order and the page of your report showing the balance are that proof.

The CFPB’s published steps for disputing with the furnisher run in this order:

  1. Dispute the error in writing, by certified mail, with the company that gave the information to the credit reporting company.
  2. Address it to the furnisher’s address on your report, or to the address it names for credit reporting disputes.
  3. Use the CFPB’s sample letter as a guide.
  4. Furnishers generally must investigate and respond within 30 days of receiving it.
  5. If the information is wrong or cannot be verified, the furnisher must update or remove it and notify all the credit reporting companies.
  6. If the furnisher says it is accurate, you can ask the credit reporting companies to add a statement explaining the dispute.

How do I dispute a discharged balance with all three credit bureaus?

Send each bureau that shows the balance its own written dispute, with the account number, a clear explanation, a copy of the report page with the item circled, and copies (never originals) of your discharge order. A bureau that does not report the item cannot investigate it, so skip that one. Each bureau must reinvestigate within 30 days of receiving your dispute, extended by up to 15 days if you send relevant information during that window, and must tell you the results within five business days of finishing (15 U.S.C. 1681i, 2025).

Keep copies of everything and ask for a return receipt. A bureau forwards your dispute and your documents to the lender, so one letter reaches both. The lender’s own duty to investigate comes from Section 623 of the FCRA. Timelines vary, so build in mail time at both ends.

What goes wrong with free apps and repair firms on discharged balances?

Credit Karma’s Direct Dispute reaches TransUnion only and does not draft or mail letters, which leaves Equifax and Experian outside it. Its Trustpilot score is 1.1 across 915 reviews, and a one-star review of Credit Karma from Conqueso S., dated September 24, 2026, reads: “You cannot get ahold of a human being at this company.”

Dovly sends TransUnion dispute letters only, one a month on its free plan, with its AI choosing the items on Premium. Lexington Law charges $139.95 a month, and 79 of the 134 one- and two-star reviews in its latest 200 on Trustpilot say the reviewer paid for months and nothing changed.

If you paid one of them and the balance still sat there, that is a poor deal, and it is not a failing of yours. A discharged balance needs a letter for each wrong item at each bureau and the lender, and the tool has to show you every one.

What can I do if the lender keeps collecting a discharged debt?

Collection on a debt the discharge covered is a different problem from a wrong credit-report balance, and it calls for a bankruptcy attorney or the bankruptcy court. Debt collectors cannot try to collect on debts discharged in bankruptcy (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, 2022). If a creditor tries anyway, you can file a motion reporting the action and asking the court to reopen your case, and the court can sanction a creditor for violating the discharge injunction, normally with civil contempt (U.S. Courts).

One exception matters. A collector may place a discharged debt for collection if it is secured by an enforceable lien and the collector tells the transferee your personal liability was discharged (eCFR, 12 CFR 1006.30, 2021). You can also file a complaint about debt collection with the CFPB, which you submit yourself.

A discharged balance is an error you correct in writing

The discharge settled the debt, and your disputes settle what the reports say about it. Pull the order, check each account against it, and put every dispute in writing, to the lender and to each bureau reporting the balance.

How CreditRefresh drafts a discharged-balance dispute for all three bureaus in three steps

For a discharged balance that is still wrong, we take you from report scan to a drafted letter for each wrong item at all three bureaus, then to mailing, in three steps with nothing to learn. We are software you control, not a repair agency: you review and sign every letter before it goes out. Members rate us 4.6 across 22 reviews on Trustpilot, and in a five-star review on September 20, 2026, Rory D. wrote: “Found errors that I was unaware of in a very short time”.

We are included with Refresh Monitoring at $49.99 a month, with no setup fee, no per-dispute charge and no contract, and you can cancel anytime. Mailing the letters yourself is free; the only optional cost is a small per-letter fee if you have our partner RushMail print and mail a round. Our 100% money-back guarantee is a refund promise, never a score promise: a member who works the full program and sees no bureau score rise above where they started can claim back every Refresh Monitoring payment, with the subscription kept active for 12 consecutive months. The conditions are at creditrefresh.ai/guarantee. We are not a law firm and do not give legal advice, the bureaus decide dispute outcomes, and no one can promise a result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a discharged debt have to show a zero balance on my credit report?

Yes. An account included in your bankruptcy should report as included in bankruptcy with a zero balance after discharge. The bankruptcy entry itself can still appear: Chapter 7 may report for up to 10 years from filing and Chapter 13 for up to 7.

How much will correcting a discharged balance change my credit score?

No one can promise a score change, because the effect depends on the rest of your file. A disputed account can carry a note while the bureau investigates, and some scoring treatments exclude it, which can move a score a little in either direction for a short time. Bureaus cannot penalize you for using your dispute rights.

Does a Chapter 13 discharge change how I fix the balance?

The steps stay the same: confirm the debt was covered, then dispute in writing with the lender and each bureau. What differs is when you receive the discharge, which comes after you finish all payments under your plan, and a few debts are dischargeable in Chapter 13 but not Chapter 7 (U.S. Courts). Check your own discharge order for which debts it covers.

What records should I keep when I dispute a discharged balance?

First, keep copies of your dispute letter and the documents you send. Second, send the letter by certified mail and ask for a return receipt. Third, include copies, not originals, of your supporting documents. Fourth, include the page of your credit report with the disputed items circled or highlighted (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau).

Can I dispute again if the bureau leaves the balance in place?

You can, but the new dispute has to be meaningfully different from the first, because a bureau can dismiss one it reasonably finds frivolous or irrelevant. If the lender says the information is accurate, you can ask the bureaus to add a statement explaining your dispute. Before complaining to the CFPB about a credit reporting company, the law requires you to dispute with that company first, and to attest that the dispute is no longer pending or was filed more than 45 days earlier (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, 2026).

CreditRefresh reads your reports from all three bureaus and drafts the written dispute for each wrong discharged balance, and you review and sign every letter before it is sent. Backed by a 100% money-back guarantee.
