Start by finding which bureau report shows the business card, then ask the card issuer in writing to correct it and dispute it with each of Equifax, Experian and TransUnion under the FCRA. CreditRefresh reads your three reports, flags the item and drafts a ready-to-send dispute letter for each bureau, which you review and sign before anything goes out.
Until someone corrects it, that card’s balance and payment history sit in your personal file for every lender to read. First confirm it is truly an error, because a card you personally guaranteed is accurate reporting, and a dispute does not fit it.
Why is a business credit card on my personal credit report?
An issuer can report a business card to your personal file because you signed a personal guarantee. That is a choice to check against your agreement, not an error. A card you never opened, or one opened by mistake, is a true reporting error.
Read your card agreement for guarantee language before you do anything else. If you guaranteed the card, the reporting is accurate, and disputing accurate information is the fastest way to get later, legitimate disputes dismissed. If the card is not yours at all, Section 611(a)(5) of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (1970) says a bureau must delete or modify any item it finds inaccurate, incomplete or cannot verify.
A card you never opened can also be identity theft. The FTC’s Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book 2024 (2025) logged 406,110 credit card fraud reports on new accounts among 1,135,291 identity theft reports. If that fits you, start at IdentityTheft.gov. A dispute letter alone is not the right first tool.
How do I check which of my three credit reports shows the business card?
Pull your report from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, because a business card can appear on one, two or all three. Note the issuer name, the account number, the balance, the open date and any late marks.
The FTC’s guidance (2020) says to go to annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877-322-8228. Other sites can charge money or collect your personal information. You get a free report each year from each bureau, and the FTC notes that one bureau sometimes carries slightly different information than the others. Only dispute with a bureau that actually shows the card, because a bureau cannot investigate what is not in its file.
In a September 20, 2026 Trustpilot review, Rory D. gave us five stars and wrote: “Found errors that I was unaware of in a very short time”
What should I say when I call the business card issuer?
Call the issuer’s credit or customer service line first and say the business account is being reported to your personal credit file in error. Ask them to correct their reporting to the bureaus and to confirm it in writing.
Write down the representative’s name, the case number and the date they say the update will happen. A furnisher (the bank or lender that reports the item) that gets a direct dispute must investigate and review what you send. It must finish within the same 30-day period a bureau runs, under Section 623(a)(8) of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (1970). A phone call starts a conversation. A written follow-up starts a record, so send one the same day and keep a copy.
How do I dispute a business card with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion?
File a dispute with each bureau that shows the error, online or by mail. Attach what proves it: your agreement, the issuer’s written confirmation and a statement of what is wrong. Send each bureau its own letter that names the account and says what is inaccurate. The bureau generally has about 30 days to investigate, though timelines vary, so keep copies of everything and any reference numbers.
The CFPB’s guidance (2026) says to mail by certified mail with a return receipt, and to include your full name and address, each mistake and why, copies (never originals) of your documents, and your report with the mistakes circled.
| Bureau | Mail address | Phone |
|---|---|---|
| Equifax | Equifax Information Services LLC, P.O. Box 740256, Atlanta, GA 30348 | (866) 349-5191 |
| Experian | Experian, P.O. Box 4500, Allen, TX 75013 | (888) 397-3742 |
| TransUnion | TransUnion LLC Consumer Dispute Center, P.O. Box 2000, Chester, PA 19016 | (800) 916-8800 |
Each bureau keeps its own file, so a correction at one does not carry to the others. The bureau sends your evidence to the issuer, must give you the result in writing, and owes you a free copy of your report if anything changes. Adding new information mid-investigation can extend the window to 45 days.
A monitoring app is not a substitute for this. Credit Karma’s Direct Dispute reaches TransUnion only and does not draft or mail letters. A one-star Trustpilot review of Credit Karma from July 8, 2026, by Namaste O., reads: “I got a notification saying they linked my husband’s car loan in with my credit. Nothing my husband or I wanted or would have approved. No trust left for credit karma.”
Do I need a credit repair company to fix a wrong business card?
No. Traditional credit-repair firms commonly charge $79 to $139 a month plus a setup fee, and the right to dispute is already yours under federal law.
The Credit People publishes $99 a month for Standard, $119 a month for Premium and $599 for 6 months of Premium. The firm drafts and sends your disputes, so you do not draft, sign or mail the letters. It shows a 1.7 on Trustpilot across 18 reviews. Brenda gave The Credit People one star on May 3, 2023, and wrote: “Slow service no communication”
Going to the issuer yourself follows the CFPB’s published steps (2026):
- Use the CFPB’s sample furnisher dispute letter as a guide.
- Send the dispute to the furnisher in writing, by certified mail.
- Address it to the furnisher’s address on your consumer report, or to an address the furnisher specifies for credit reporting disputes.
- The furnisher generally must investigate and respond within 30 days of receiving the dispute.
- If the information is wrong or can’t be verified, the furnisher must update or remove it and notify all the credit reporting companies, which must then update your reports.
- If the furnisher decides the information is accurate, contact the credit reporting companies again and ask them to add a statement explaining the dispute to your reports.
What if the bureau and the issuer both say the card is correct?
The CFPB complaint goes to the company, which has a set period to respond, usually up to 60 days. File it only after your disputes through the normal channels have not worked. A complaint filed before you dispute usually draws a reply telling you to dispute first.
Check the answer before you escalate. A “verified” reply does not settle whether the card belongs on your file, and Section 611(a)(5) of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (1970) still requires deletion of anything the bureau cannot verify. You can ask the bureau for a Method of Verification, which describes the procedure it used. The bureau must respond within 15 days, though that is not a right to every underlying record. A thin, boilerplate answer is a reason to dispute again with new evidence. The CFPB’s Consumer Response Annual Report (2025) notes that consumers frequently said reinvestigations took more than 30 days. If a clear FCRA violation caused real harm, talk to a consumer-protection attorney.
What should I watch for after the card is removed?
After a correction, pull your reports again to confirm the business card is gone from each bureau and that it does not return when the issuer next reports. Section 612 of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (1970) entitles you to a free disclosure from each nationwide bureau once in any 12-month period. A bureau that changes your file also owes you a free copy.
If the item comes back, first confirm it is a true reinsertion (same account, same furnisher) and not a separate entry. Then dispute it again, citing the earlier deletion and any missing reinsertion notice. Keep every letter, receipt and response, because every escalation quotes them.
A guaranteed card stays, and a wrong one gets corrected in writing
The order is the answer. Confirm the card is an error and not a guarantee you signed, get the issuer’s correction in writing, dispute with all three bureaus, and escalate to the CFPB only when those steps stall. A card that is truly not yours belongs off your file, and the paper trail is what gets it there.
How do the options for fixing a wrong business card compare?
This table sets CreditRefresh beside the options you are weighing, on price, bureau reach and Trustpilot scores. It shows what each approach buys a person disputing a business card wrongly on their personal file.
| Tool | What you pay | What that buys | Bureaus | Trustpilot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Credit Karma | Free (monetized through lender referrals and ads) | Monitoring and lender offers; Direct Dispute reaches TransUnion only, does not draft or mail letters | TransUnion | 1.1 (915 reviews) |
Every price is that company’s own published rate, read off that company’s own site on September 15, 2026. Trustpilot scores and review counts as published on October 5, 2026.
Skip the paperwork. Start your dispute.
CreditRefresh drafts your FCRA dispute letter and tracks the 30-day investigation window. You review, approve, and send. You stay in control.
Get StartedHow CreditRefresh reads all three reports and drafts each letter for $49.99 a month
The hard part of this fix is the bureau step: three reports, three letters, one error. CreditRefresh pulls reports from all three bureaus, scans for errors, and drafts a dispute letter for each bureau that shows the item. It takes you from scan to letter to mailing in three steps, with nothing to learn. A letter is drafted only where the item has grounds for dispute.
It is included with Refresh Monitoring at $49.99 a month, with no setup fee, no per-dispute charge and no contract, and you can cancel anytime. You mail the letters yourself or have our partner RushMail mail them for a small per-letter fee. We hold a 4.6 on Trustpilot across 22 reviews. Jean L. gave us five stars on August 24, 2026, and wrote: “I especially appreciate my support advisor Austin who’s responses were always “on -point” and valuable.”
Members who work the full program and see no bureau score rise above where they started can claim back every Refresh Monitoring payment. That is a refund promise, never a score promise, and the conditions are at creditrefresh.ai/guarantee. We are not a law firm, our letters are not legal advice, and no result is promised: the bureaus decide outcomes, and scores depend on the rest of your file. You choose what gets disputed. You approve every letter. Nothing goes out without you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it legal for a business card to show on my personal credit report?
Yes, when the reporting is accurate. Section 604 of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (1970) lets a bureau furnish a report for permissible purposes, including a credit transaction involving you. A card you personally guaranteed is accurate; a card that is not yours is a reporting error you can dispute.
How long does a credit bureau have to answer a dispute?
A bureau generally has about 30 days from receiving your dispute, and up to 45 if you add relevant information during the investigation. Timelines vary, and mail time comes first. The CFPB’s Consumer Response Annual Report (2025) notes that consumers frequently said reinvestigations ran past 30 days.
Can I dispute with all three credit bureaus at once?
Yes, and you should dispute with every bureau that shows the card. Each bureau keeps its own file and runs its own 30-day clock, so a correction at one does not change the others. CreditRefresh drafts letters for Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, which you mail yourself or send through RushMail.
Does CreditRefresh draft a letter for every bureau?
The letter goes to the bureau whose report actually contains the item. Our scan covers all three bureaus and flags disputable items, and we draft a letter only when the item has grounds for dispute.
Do I have to pay per dispute or sign a contract with CreditRefresh?
No. CreditRefresh has no per-dispute charge and no contract, and it is included with Refresh Monitoring at $49.99 a month. The only optional cost is the small per-letter RushMail fee if you have us mail a round for you.
Will disputing the card raise my credit score?
No one can promise that, and we do not. A dispute asks a bureau to investigate, and the bureau decides. The bureaus cannot penalize you for disputing, though a temporary remark during the investigation can cause small movement in either direction.
CreditRefresh reads your three reports, flags the business card and drafts a letter to each bureau for you to review and sign. The 100% money-back guarantee covers every Refresh Monitoring payment under its stated conditions.
