Get a car loan with bad credit by checking all three credit reports for errors, gathering proof of income, and prequalifying with lenders before you apply. If your reports hold items that look wrong, CreditRefresh drafts a dispute letter for each one with Refresh Monitoring at $49.99 a month, and you review and sign every letter.
You may not know what your reports say until you read them, and a car lot is a bad place to find out. Fixing what is wrong, bringing the right paperwork and comparing offers inside a short window are all steps you can take before you sign anything.
Pull your three credit reports first, then shop for the loan
Order your reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion before you talk to any lender, and read each one line by line. The entries you find wrong are the ones you can dispute before an application, and the order that works is reports, fixes, paperwork, then offers.
Lenders and dealerships do specialize in helping people with bad credit, previous repossessions, bankruptcies or limited credit history. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (How long does it take to get my free credit report after I order it?) and the Federal Trade Commission (Fixing Your Credit FAQs) publish these steps for ordering your free reports:
- Go to AnnualCreditReport.com to request your report online. If you request online, you should be able to access it immediately.
- Or order by phone at (877) 322-8228. Your report will be processed and mailed to you within 15 days.
- Or order by mail using the Annual Credit Report Request Form or by writing a letter. Your request will be processed and mailed within 15 days of receipt, and you should allow two to three weeks for delivery.
- Fold the form (do not staple or tape), place it into a #10 envelope, affix required postage, and mail it to Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281, Atlanta, GA 30348-5281. Use a black or blue pen and write your responses in PRINTED CAPITAL LETTERS without touching the sides of the boxes.
- Whether you order online, by phone or by mail, it may take longer to receive your report if the credit reporting company needs more information to verify your identity.
How do you spot errors on your credit reports before you apply?
Check each entry for anything inaccurate, incomplete, unverifiable or too old to be legally reported, and mark it for a dispute. CreditRefresh reads your reports and flags items in those four groups so you do not have to catch them by eye.
The scan flags items that look inaccurate, such as wrong balances, misreported late payments, accounts that aren’t yours, and duplicates. For each flagged item, the AI drafts a tailored, print-ready FCRA letter with your name, and each letter cites the specific FCRA rights it stands on. We draft disputes for all three bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
The right to dispute is already yours. The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA, 1970) gives every consumer a free report from each bureau, the right to dispute inaccurate, incomplete or unverifiable information, and the right to have unverifiable items corrected or deleted.
Age matters too. Under Section 605 of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (15 U.S.C. 1681c), most negative items, including accounts placed for collection or charged to profit and loss, may be reported for seven years. The statute caps cases under title 11 at ten years from the date of entry of the order for relief or the date of adjudication. That ten-year ceiling covers a Chapter 13 filing as well as a Chapter 7, and the seven-year treatment of a completed Chapter 13 is the bureaus’ own voluntary practice. After those windows an item is obsolete and may be disputed on that basis.
What are your options for fixing credit report errors before a car loan?
You can write the letters yourself, use software you control, or pay a firm to work the file for you. Credit Karma’s Direct Dispute reaches TransUnion only, and Lexington Law’s attorney-handled disputes cost $139.95 a month, invoiced at the end of each service period.
Writing the letters yourself is free, and the list in the next section shows what goes in one. The work is the hard part: finding every item, drafting, copying proof, mailing and tracking three bureaus. Software takes the drafting off you for less than a firm charges.
Credit Karma is free, monetized through lender referrals and ads, and shows monitoring and lender offers. Its Direct Dispute does not draft or mail letters. Trustpilot shows it at 1.1 from 915 reviews. In January 2023 the FTC entered a final consent order against Credit Karma, LLC, with an amount of $3,000,000, over dark patterns that misrepresented that consumers were pre-approved for credit card offers when many were denied (FTC, 2023). In a one-star Trustpilot review of Credit Karma dated July 11, 2026, Rocky R. wrote: “It said not HIT! My score dropped 4 points. I won’t use you again”
Lexington Law is a law firm that handles disputes for you across all three bureaus, with attorney case setup after a free assessment. Trustpilot shows it at 3.2 from 624 reviews. In 2019 the CFPB filed a lawsuit alleging advance fees for telemarketed credit repair and deceptive bait-and-switch marketing. The CFPB’s 2023 stipulated final judgment against Progrexion Marketing, Inc., PGX Holdings, Inc., CreditRepair.com, Inc. and John C. Heath, Attorney at Law, PLLC (Lexington Law) was for $2,700,000,000 over illegal advance fees and bait-and-switch advertising (CFPB, 2023). In December 2024 the CFPB announced the return of $1,800,000,000 to consumers from its victims relief fund (CFPB, 2024). On Trustpilot, Jennifer C. wrote in a one-star review of Lexington Law on March 20, 2024: “Their policy read they would initially charge $14.95 but $99 was withdrawn from my account.”
Dovly’s AI writes and sends TransUnion dispute letters for you, free at $0 for one a month, or on Premium at $99.99 a year or $39.99 a month for unlimited letters, with the AI picking which items. It reaches TransUnion only and shows 4.6 on Trustpilot from 715 reviews. Dispute Beast is a free tool bundled with paid Beast Credit Monitoring from $49.99 a month, with Sprint Mail extra per letter or free self-mail. It reaches all three bureaus and shows 4.2 from 2091 reviews.
How do you file a dispute with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion?
Send each bureau its own dispute naming the item, saying why it is wrong and attaching proof, and keep a copy of everything you send. Once a bureau gets your dispute, the FCRA sets how long it has to investigate, so file well before you plan to apply.
A consumer reporting agency has 30 days to reinvestigate a disputed item, counted from the date it receives the dispute notice (Federal Trade Commission, Fair Credit Reporting Act, 2026). The CFPB (How do I dispute an error on my credit report?), TransUnion (Credit Disputes) and the CFPB (How long does it take to repair an error on a credit report?) publish what a dispute letter carries:
- Contact information for you, including your complete name, address and telephone number.
- Credit report confirmation number, if available.
- Each error you want fixed, including the account number for any account you may be disputing.
- A clear explanation of why you are disputing the information.
- A request that the information be removed or corrected.
- A copy of the portion of your credit report that contains the disputed items, with the disputed items circled or highlighted.
- Copies (not originals) of documents that support your position.
- Optionally, send the letter by certified mail with a return receipt requested, so you have a record that it was received.
- Keep copies of your dispute letter and the documents you send with it.
What should you bring when you apply for a bad-credit car loan?
Bring recent pay stubs as proof of steady income and proof of where you live. A cosigner with better credit and a less expensive used car can also help your application.
Gather these before you visit a lender:
- Recent pay stubs.
- Proof of residence.
- A steady job or reliable income.
- A cosigner with better credit, if you have one.
Choosing a less expensive used vehicle can help too.
How do you compare car loan offers without hurting your credit?
Compare offers inside the rate-shopping window, and ask about rates before you formally apply. The window is 45 days for newer versions of the FICO Scores, during which multiple auto loan inquiries are treated as a single inquiry (myFICO, The Timing of Hard Credit Inquiries: When and Why They Matter).
For FICO Scores calculated from older versions of the scoring formula, the shopping period is any 14-day span (myFICO).
The CFPB says a lender will run a credit check when you apply for credit, and that if you’re simply asking about rates, they can’t pull your credit report (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, 2025). A lender’s check when you apply for a new auto loan is a hard inquiry that will impact your credit score, while an existing lender’s pull is a soft inquiry that won’t (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, 2025).
Which tool should you use to dispute errors before a car loan?
The table sets each tool’s price, what it does and which bureaus it reaches, so you can match one to the reader you are. Dovly and Credit Karma reach TransUnion only, while the other three tools reach all three bureaus.
| Tool | What you pay | What that buys | Bureaus | Trustpilot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CreditRefresh | $49.99 a month via Refresh Monitoring; no setup fee; letters self-mailed free or RushMail per-letter fee | Software you control; AI drafts letters, you review and sign; bundled with Refresh Monitoring subscription | All three | 4.6 (22 reviews) |
| Dovly | Free $0 (no credit card); Premium $99.99/year (about $8.33/mo) or $39.99/month; no setup fee published; Dovly sends the disputes itself | Dovly AI writes and sends TransUnion dispute letters for you (one a month on Free; unlimited on Premium, the AI picking which items); weekly TransUnion report, alerts, $2K tradeline, credit lock, $1M ID theft insurance on Premium | TransUnion only | 4.6 (715 reviews) |
| Dispute Beast | Free tool; Beast Credit Monitoring from $49.99/m; Sprint Mail extra per letter, or free self-mail | Software the user controls (DIY AI app), bundled with paid monitoring required | All three | 4.2 (2091 reviews) |
| Lexington Law | $139.95/month, invoiced at end of each service period; 50% off first payment for veterans and active military | Attorney-handled disputes by the firm, not software you control; attorney case setup after a free assessment | All three | 3.2 (624 reviews) |
| Credit Karma | Free (monetized through lender referrals and ads) | Monitoring and lender offers; Direct Dispute reaches TransUnion only, does not draft or mail letters | TransUnion | 1.1 (915 reviews) |
Every price is that company’s own published rate, as its own site states it. Trustpilot scores and review counts as published.
How does CreditRefresh help you dispute report errors before a car loan?
CreditRefresh takes you from report scan to letter generation to mailing in three steps, with nothing to learn, for a flat $49.99 a month. Refresh Monitoring is a credit-monitoring subscription that includes CreditRefresh.
We use AI to scan the reports we pull through our monitoring partner and prepare draft letters for Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. After accounts are connected, your job is reviewing each letter and deciding whether it is worth sending. Customers review and approve everything before it goes out, and we give you print-ready letters once you approve them. RushMail is our mailing partner, a separate optional order used only on request. If you choose it for a bureau letter, you upload identity documents, and it appends your ID front, ID back and proof of address to that mailing.
Skip the paperwork. Start your dispute.
CreditRefresh drafts your FCRA dispute letter and tracks the 30-day investigation window. You review, approve, and send. You stay in control.
Get StartedJean L. gave us five stars on Trustpilot in August 2026: “I especially appreciate my support advisor Austin who’s responses were always “on -point” and valuable.”
Members who work the full twelve-month program and see none of their three bureau scores rise above the starting point can claim back every Refresh Monitoring payment. That is a refund promise and not a score promise, and RushMail charges are not refunded under it. All requirements are at creditrefresh.ai/guarantee, so read them before you rely on eligibility. CreditRefresh is not a law firm and its letters are not legal advice.
FAQ
Can a cosigner help you get a car loan with bad credit?
Having someone with better credit cosign is one of the things that can help you get approved. It sits beside steady income, recent pay stubs and proof of residence. Choosing a less expensive used vehicle helps as well.
How much should you put down on a car loan with bad credit?
Putting $500 to $2,000 down, if possible, can help your application. Bring that alongside your pay stubs and proof of residence.
What decides whether a dispute changes your credit score?
Based on the furnisher’s response, the bureau deletes, modifies or verifies the item. Section 611(a)(5) of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (15 U.S.C. 1681i(a)(5)) requires that where, after any reinvestigation, an item of disputed information is found to be inaccurate or incomplete or cannot be verified, the agency promptly delete the item from the file or modify it as appropriate. Equifax, Experian and TransUnion each keep a separate file, so a deletion at one does not automatically change the score at the others, and the change appears the next time a lender pulls the report or your monitoring refreshes. The bureaus determine dispute outcomes, we do not promise a score, and scores depend on the rest of the file.
Do you have to mail the dispute letters yourself?
You can print and mail each approved letter yourself, or hand a round to RushMail, our mailing partner, for a small per-letter fee. RushMail costs extra only if you choose it over mailing the letters yourself. With a RushMail order, we enclose copies of the uploaded documents with each bureau letter. You review and sign every letter first either way.
Can you cancel CreditRefresh anytime?
Yes. There is no long-term contract and no cancellation fee, and you can cancel anytime, no questions asked.
How long can a late payment or collection stay on your credit report?
Under FCRA §605, accounts placed for collection or charged to profit and loss can be reported for seven years (Fair Credit Reporting Act, Revised 2026, FTC, §605, 2026). Other adverse items such as late payments can also be reported for seven years (15 USC Chapter 41, Subchapter III, FCRA § 605(a)(5)). The collection and charge-off clock runs from the start of the delinquency. Bankruptcy cases under title 11 or the Bankruptcy Act can be reported for 10 years from the date of entry of the order for relief or the date of adjudication, as the case may be (15 USC Chapter 41, Subchapter III, FCRA § 605(a)(1)).
How do you dispute a collection account that is blocking your car loan?
A debt validation dispute asks a collector to prove it has the right to collect a specific debt, and it applies mainly to collection accounts, especially newer ones. Within five days of first contact, a collector must send a written notice with the debt amount, the creditor’s name, the right to dispute within 30 days, and a statement that verification will be sent if you dispute in that window. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Regulation F validation information (12 CFR 1006.34) lists the collector’s name and mailing address, the creditor’s name and the current amount of the debt among what a collector must provide. A collection is disputable when the collector can’t validate it, when it is paid but still shows a balance, when it is a duplicate, or when it is past the legal reporting window. Our debt-collector directory, built on CFPB complaint data, lists 25-plus collectors and debt buyers with their aliases and per-collector dispute and removal steps.
CreditRefresh scans your Equifax, Experian and TransUnion reports for items that look inaccurate, incomplete, unverifiable or too old to report, then drafts a dispute letter for each one that you review and sign before it goes out. Backed by a 100% money-back guarantee.
