If your roommate stops paying rent, the landlord will not care who skipped it. You paid your half, but if your name is on the lease, the landlord can go after you for the whole balance, and an unpaid balance can end up with a collector.
The name on the lease puts the whole balance on your credit, and the same name gives you the power to stop it early.
Yes, a Roommate’s Unpaid Rent Can Land on Your Credit
Yes. If your name is on the lease, a roommate’s unpaid rent can reach your credit report, even when you paid your own share on time. Rent does not show up on a credit report by itself. A collection does, and about 35% of adults with a credit file already carry debt in collections (Urban Institute, 2025).
The path is simple. Your roommate skips rent, the landlord sends the unpaid balance to a collector, and the collector reports it under the names on the lease. That includes yours.
We cover the lease-break version of this in Does Breaking a Lease Hurt Your Credit?. The roommate version is harder, because you did not break anything. Someone else did.
Both Names on the Lease Means Each of You Owes All of It
A standard lease makes each signer responsible for the full rent. Lawyers call that joint and several liability. The landlord can ask either of you for 100% of the unpaid balance, and “I already paid my half” does not change what the lease says.
That matters because payment history carries 35% of a FICO Score (myFICO). A collection is one of the heaviest marks in that part of your file.
The mark also lasts. A collection can stay on your report for seven years, counted from 180 days after the first missed payment that led to it (Fair Credit Reporting Act, Section 605). It sits on your file even if your roommate is the one who caused it.
Can You Stop the Rent From Going to Collections?
You can stop it only early. Once a collector holds the file, you can dispute and negotiate, but you cannot make a landlord or collector ignore a joint debt. So the first move comes before any collector calls.
Do these in order:
- Ask the landlord for the rent ledger in writing. You need the exact amount due and the months it covers.
- Tell the landlord you will cover the gap. Put it in an email, so there is a dated record.
- Check the utility accounts. A bill in your name is yours if your roommate stops paying it.
The next two sections cover what to do with the money and the paperwork.
Pay the Missing Rent in Writing, Then Collect From Your Roommate
The surest way to keep rent out of collections is to pay it before the landlord hands it off. It feels unfair. It is still cheaper than a seven-year mark on your report.
Pay in a way that leaves a record, like a bank transfer or a check. Ask the landlord for a written receipt that shows the months covered and a zero balance. Keep every text where your roommate admits owing you.
Then go after your roommate in small claims court. Bring the lease, your payment proof and the messages. A judgment is a debt your roommate owes you, and it is much easier to chase when you hold the paper.
Check Who Signed the Lease and Whose Name Is on the Utilities
Read the lease signatures before you do anything else. The landlord’s contract runs with the people who signed it. If your roommate never signed, because they are an occupant or a subtenant, the landlord’s claim for their share is a different problem, and you should ask the landlord in writing to keep it off your account.
If you did not sign either, you may have no lease debt at all. Say so in writing.
Utilities work the same way. A gas or electric bill belongs to the name on the account. If that name is yours, the utility will look to you for a roommate’s unpaid share and for the final bill after move-out.
A Collector’s Letter Gives You 30 Days to Dispute the Debt
When a collector writes to you, the clock starts. The collector must send a written notice with the amount, the creditor’s name and your right to dispute. If you dispute the debt in writing within 30 days of receiving that notice, the collector must stop collecting until it verifies the debt (Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Section 809).
Send the dispute by mail and keep a copy. Ask for proof that you owe the amount, with the lease and the ledger attached.
Verification does not delete anything. If the lease has your name on it and the rent is unpaid, the debt is likely valid. The 30 days still buy you time, and they put every number on paper.
Pay for Delete Is a Request, and Collectors Can Say No
Pay for delete means you offer a lump sum if the collector agrees in writing to remove the entry. No law makes a collector agree, and many say no. Never send money before you hold the agreement in writing.
Paying also does less than people hope. FICO Score 9 and the FICO Score 10 suite ignore a collection that is paid in full (myFICO), and VantageScore 4.0 ignores all paid collections (VantageScore). Older models still count it. We break down which model does what in Paid vs Unpaid Collections.
Be careful with anyone who promises the entry will vanish. On September 30, 2024, the CFPB won a $41.3 million judgment against Key Credit Repair for charging advance fees and misrepresenting its ability to remove negative items. On August 10, 2026, the FTC halted Credit Glory over false promises and illegal upfront fees, with nearly $200 million collected from consumers.
Dispute a Rental Collection Only When Something on It Is Wrong
A joint debt reported correctly is hard to remove. A dispute works when a detail is wrong, such as the amount, the dates, a duplicate entry, or a name that was never on the lease. The bureau then has 30 days to investigate (Fair Credit Reporting Act, Section 611). Our guide to removing a collection from a credit report walks through the letter.
File with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, because a collection can sit on all three. Credit Karma’s own help page says its Direct Dispute only works for TransUnion. Credit Karma holds a 1.1 on Trustpilot from 915 reviews, and “promised a result that did not happen” was the top complaint, in 44 of the 197 one- and two-star reviews in its latest 200.
Paying for a tool does not change what the law lets a dispute do. Gi Daniel, a 1-star Trustpilot review of Dispute Beast, September 13, 2026: “used the services for about a year did absolutely nothing other than removing a credit inquiry litterally paid 12 months for service and also paid 12 different times for sprint mail all in all paid about $1000 for services that were unfortunately never delivered.” In Dispute Beast’s latest 200 reviews, 21 of the 33 one- and two-star ones say they paid for months and nothing changed.
Lexington Law’s parent paid for similar complaints. On August 28, 2023, the CFPB reached a $2.7 billion judgment with Progrexion and PGX Holdings over illegal advance fees and bait-and-switch advertising.
So act early, in writing, before a collector ever holds the file.
Skip the paperwork. Start your dispute.
CreditRefresh drafts your FCRA dispute letter and tracks the 30-day investigation window. You review, approve, and send. You stay in control.

How CreditRefresh Drafts Dispute Letters for All Three Bureaus in 3 Steps
A rental collection that is wrong in any detail needs a dispute at all three bureaus. In CreditRefresh’s September 18, 2026 analysis of paying-member data, 2.3% of disputed bureau-level items in mailed rounds had a recorded outcome. Within that subset, 47.9% were no longer reported on a newer pull of the same bureau, while 52.1% remained reported with a changed balance, status or negative flag.
Members rate us 4.6 on Trustpilot across 19 reviews, as of September 15, 2026. Becca, five stars, July 25, 2026: “I like that it instantly pulled up my reports and flagged the things that were bringing down my credit score so that I could review and address those problem areas.”
Here is how we work. We scan all three reports and flag entries that look inaccurate, incomplete, unverifiable, or too old to report. We draft a letter for each item you choose to challenge. You review and sign, then mail it yourself or hand the round to RushMail for a small per-letter fee. It costs $49.99 a month with Refresh Monitoring, with no setup fee and no contract. An accurate rental collection stays on the report, and the bureaus decide every outcome.
Frequently Asked Questions
How to get a rental collection removed from credit report?
An accurate collection stays until it ages off, which is seven years from 180 days after the first missed payment. If any detail is wrong, dispute it in writing with each bureau and attach your proof. A collector may agree to a pay-for-delete, but nothing forces it to.
Can you get an apartment with a roommate with bad credit?
Many landlords run credit on every adult applicant, so a roommate’s low score can come up on the application you share. Ask the landlord before you apply whether they decide per person or for the whole group, and get the answer in writing.
Does sending someone to collections hurt their credit?
Yes. Payment history is 35% of a FICO Score (myFICO), and a collection can stay on a report for seven years from 180 days after the first missed payment. Paying it helps under newer scoring models and does little under older ones.
How to kick out a roommate not paying rent?
If both of you are on the lease, you cannot remove your roommate yourself, and changing the locks can get you in trouble. Only the landlord can end a tenancy, through your state’s court process. Rules differ by state, so check your local landlord-tenant rules first.
Can I sue my roommate for unpaid rent?
Yes. Small claims court is the usual place. Bring the lease, proof of what you paid, and any messages where your roommate admits owing you.
Can a roommate ruin my credit if I’m not on the lease?
The landlord’s contract runs with the people who signed it, so if you did not sign, the rent debt is not yours. Utility bills in your name are still yours. Tell the landlord in writing that you are not a signer.
CreditRefresh reads all three of your reports, flags entries that look wrong, and drafts dispute letters you review and sign before anything is sent.
